Still homeless

Apartment hunting has been a FREAKIN nightmare. The numbers say it all…

Number of apartments we’ve seen: 25

Number of apartments we actually liked: 2

Number of competent brokers we’ve found: 0

Number of times a broker took us to an apt, but couldn’t get in: 4

Number of times we’ve liked a place, only to have it suddenly “not available”: 2

Percentage of time a broker has been late by 30 or more minutes: 100%

Despite all this we finally settled on a place last night and arranged to sign the lease and provide a deposit today. This apartment was actually the first one we saw over 2 weeks ago and we’ve gone back to see it three times so the broker and owner know us pretty well.  Despite this, three hours before we are all supposed to meet to pick up the key the owner’s wife decides she doesn’t want to rent to a bachelor and insists on a family.   WTF!

Apartment hunting is so painful here that I briefly considered getting married and adopting 3 kids just to sign a damn lease…

  1. tell them your spouse and family are in America and you are working here in India to save money to bring them to Hydrabad. You could probably find pictures of a family on Flickr.

Same thing happened to my friend Tina in Mumbai - they wouldn't rent an apartment to 3 single girls. I guess Indian people hate singles.

  2. That is exactly the problem I faced! That and an additional one of, "so what's your caste" because of my most awesome beard.
